The whole Iraq truth

If you are an interested observer of the situation in Iraq but by no means an expert, you may be having trouble deciding how to interpret the now-regular media reports of an improving security situation. This Christopher Hitchens column won't help:

I am not at all certain that any of this apparently good news is really genuine or will be really lasting. However, I am quite sure both that it could be true and that it would be wonderful if it were to be true.

The second sentence sounds like just the kind of wishful thinking that got the US into Iraq in the first place. Still, if the good news does last and Iraq recovers substantially over the next few years, I wonder how we will come to view our current debate about the wisdom of the Iraq war. Will it all sound a little overwrought?
