  • François Grignon writing in the Guardian suggests the $US 950m credit line facility China offered the Zimbabwean government and a separate $US 5 billion deal related to platinum concessions will weaken prospects for reform. 
  • Cross-Strait ties still warm: following Ma Ying-jeou's election as party chief in Taiwan on the weekend, Chinese President Hu wrote in a congratulatory telegram: 'I hope our two parties can continue to promote peaceful development in cross-strait relations, and help bolster mutual trust between the two sides in political affairs'. Ma replied: 'We should continue efforts to consolidate peace in the Taiwan Strait and rebuild regional stability.'
