Three Shanghai scenes

Above: With landscaped greenery in the foreground and a gothic skyscraper behind, you'd almost think this was New York's Central Park. But Shanghai's People's Park is one of a number of attractive green spaces I spotted around town, something that is apparently a fairly recent development. Australians I spoke to here say Shanghai is coping well with the global downturn, and they see no obvious indicators of increased poverty around the city.

Above: Apologies for the poor quality of the photo, but this was the chaotic scene along Shanghai's famous promenade, The Bund, last night. Work was continuing well after dark on a new subway line under the street, in preparation for next year's Expo 2010. There is signage up all over the city for this event.

Above: I'm not sure if this sign for a tacky gift and souvenir shop is an example of Chinglish or a dusty-dry piece of gallows humour about the financial crisis.
