Solomon Islands: One step forward…

This Solomon Star report suggests the Australian-led intervention to Solomon Islands (aka RAMSI) still has a lot of work to do before it can leave the country. After a recent soccer match, rioters overwhelmed local Solomon Islands police, forcing them to retreat to their Chinatown base, where they had to call RAMSI for help. With the assistance of RAMSI police and military personnel, the situation was quickly brought back under control.

RAMSI police Commander Denis McDermott put a nice spin on the incident: ‘This was a good example of the high level of preparedness, cooperation and the ability we have to quickly respond to any situation where the SIPF [Solomon Islands Police Force] require our support’. Unfortunately, it also sounds like a good example of just how unprepared Solomon Islands is to take charge of its own destiny.
