Rudd announces more troops for Afghanistan

The ABC has the story. Key quote from the PM:

"We cannot ignore this cold hard strategic fact - less security in Afghanistan means less security for Australians," he said. "Handing Afghanistan back to terrorist control will increase the threat to all Australians."

I buy that logic, but it doesn't follow that putting more troops in (or, for that matter, putting any troops in) is a sensible response to the threat. I would argue it is an extremely inefficient use of resources with a low probability of success against a threat that is serious but far from existential, and which could be better countered by mostly non-military means.
