Reader riposte: What are the subs for?

7 June 2012 15:13

Geoff Miller writes:

Probably many readers of 'The Interpreter' will have watched and listened to Stephen Smith over the last couple of days responding to questions on ABC TV and radio on David Uren's book, and its reported revelation of a 'secret chapter' of the 2009 Defence White Paper involving the projected use of the proposed twelve 'super' submarines in joint operations with the United States Navy against China.

Watchers and listeners will, I am sure, have come to the conclusion that Smith embodies all the qualities we would want to see in a Defence Minister, or indeed in a member of our Defence Force — dauntless, resilient, tenacious under attack, refusing to give an inch of ground. He firmly dismissed the alleged secret chapter and its claims as nonsense.

But in saying that, he may have left himself open to another line of attack: if these enormously expensive submarines aren't intended for what Uren describes, what are they for?
