James Brown raises an important point about priorities.

There is one thing I didn't quite understand though: a Pashtun may well have a very good understanding of retribution, but that retribution still has to be executed. Somebody had to killĀ  (or capture or spank or serve a warrant on) Shafiea Ullah at some place at some time. If Australian special forces were not the ones to execute the kill/capture, then who was?

As for the question of to whom the message was addressed, it seems to me that, in the same way, it was addressed to the whole Pashtun and Afghan world (as well as the Australian domestic audience). Justice had to be done and had to be seen to be done. And so it was.
