Reader riposte: Political football

18 October 2011 08:39

J. Bechara writes:

'Australia is blessed by four codes of football' is a curious affirmation, since the variety of rugby codes is the main cause of their limited range (none can be considered a national sport), shortage of funds and dependence on controversial sources, as poker machines. Soccer (or football, as it's worldwide known), the most played, watched, advertised, broadcasted and financed sport on earth is only mentioned by the author as 'a creature subject to the command and control of the coach/manager'.

No other sport has such social, diplomatic, political and economical power as football and to ignore that is to conform with provincial and semi-amateur modalities. 'Political football, the Australian way' exemplifies once more Australia's narrow participation in relevant world affairs.
