Reader riposte: NZ-Fiji

Paul Cotton responds to Jenny Hayward-Jones' post on Fiji-New Zealand relations:

I think that if Jenny reads the item in the NZ Herald of 13 January she will see that there is much more to the recent moves than a wish to put more consular staff on the ground. A counsellor position is mentioned and a Deputy High Commissioner. McCully speaks of a determination to improve the relationship and being able to disagree about some things. This is considerably more than has been said by the Australian Government. It is interesting to note that these recent development are so far unreported in the SMH or Australian.

I also hear reports from home that Sir Paul Reeves, who had worked on Fiji questions over the years, has been popping in and out of the country recently.

Surely it’s time for some word from Canberra. Or are they waiting for a shove from Hillary Clinton.

If Canberra is waiting for a shove from Hillary, it will have to be by phone. She's cancelled her Australia visit and is returning home to deal with the Haiti emergency.
