Reader riposte: New age of diplomacy

5 June 2012 15:43

Dr Geoff Randal responds to Martine Letts' piece on Allan Gyngell's recent speech, 'What happened to diplomacy?':

A good summary of what was an interesting address.

Before you get into diplomacy, you need to want to get on with those out there, as diplomacy is all about the mutual adjustments and accommodations necessary for that. How diplomacy might work if adjustment and accommodation are for them, not us, is not hard to predict. And diplomacy around values, rather than interests, is also difficult to carry off. 'Sorry, that's unacceptable' augurs ill for what might follow.
