The excellent Battleland blog carried a story yesterday outlining a new report from the Centre for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments which outlines a new plan for US defence planning in the coming 'decades of austerity'. Battleland highlights the four 'crown jewels' - special operations forces, cyberspace capabilities, next generation long-range penetrating surveillance and strike, and survivable undersea warfare systems - CBAS picks out as the military capabilities which should not be subject to budget cuts due to their strategic value.

In the context of the upcoming Defence white paper, I would be interested to see what Interpreter readers consider to be the crown jewels of Australian military capabilities?
