A reader writes:

Enjoyed James' post; he could also have mentioned Operation Anode, which is defined as 'the positive pole of a battery' and – in keeping with the bizarre dancing theme – Operation Morris Dance, our 1987 response to the Fijian coup.

I would add that the Americans are not totally humourless about this stuff. For instance, although this goes beyond the strict subject matter of military operations names, the US Marines do have an observation post in Afghanistan called ManBearPig.

But naturally, it's the Brits who really excel. Heard of Operation Winkle?:
