Reader riposte: Leader of the year

Pete Speer disagrees with those of our experts who picked Obama:

For this year? Obama? Triumphant leader of the Democrat Party, certainly. The one we hope will return America to the Days of Glory and make us proud and patriotic again, you bet.

But as a leader to this date, he is a triumph of hope over experience. Your pickers need to come down from the land of agog. Let the vote be on the basis of national accomplishment. He was better organized, had a better machine, brought out more voters. All well and good. Now comes the tough four years of governing and hopefully accomplishing. That is the true evidence of leadership.

Mobilizing all those Democrats and Republicans to sacrifice if called for, to dream where necessary, to risk unpopularity in the short run and return to economic rationality when possible — that will be true leadership and a reason for laurels. In the meantime, tell your pickers to sober up. The party is over, the hard work begins.
