Reader riposte: Gillard in New Zealand

18 February 2011 13:52

Paul Cotton responds to Sam's call for a New Zealand perspective on the PM's visit:

What the Prime Minister's visit meant was clearly shown in the report on the visit in The Australian yesterday. A splendid image of Gillard facing a Maori challenge in Wellington was entirely surrounded with the Prime Minister's comments on the mining tax rate. There was a three-word tie in: 'Speaking in Wellington...'

I'm afraid it all goes back to a statement by Howard several years ago. 'New Zealand is too small to count.' Even the fact that HMNZS Canterbury will be supplying amphibious lift capacity for the RAN for the next few years barely rates a mention.

Thank goodness the Super Rugby starts this evening.
