Reader riposte: The Canberra culture

11 February 2011 14:01

Christian Bennett responds to Graeme Dobell's column on Canberra's 'Yes, Minister' culture:

Canberra culture' Make that Canberra requirement! Watching Yes Minister was part of the formal selection process for the 1992 DFAT Graduate Intake. Those who had made it to this round of the selection process were shown, as a group, half an episode. As the predicament before Sir Humphrey unfolded, the TV was switched off and the group asked to form a circle. They then spent the next 30 minutes discussing 'What would you do'' while the three-person selection panel circled monitoring our responses! Several who sat in that circle are today senior DFAT officials.
