Piracy: Australia contribution

It's happening: Australia will send a frigate and, apparently, an Orion maritime patrol aircraft to join the international effort against piracy in the Gulf of Aden, an idea that some of us at Lowy have been advocating since January. It is a commendable move not only because it shows Australia making a contribution as a trading nation, a middle power and an Indian Ocean player, but also because it will give Australian forces practical experience in working with a wide range of partners, not only old friends like the US and NATO but also the rising navies of the Asian century.
