Picking winners, revolutionary style

Secretary of State Clinton appeared on NBC's Meet the Press overnight, and was asked whether the US was reaching out to the 'young, secular movement that wants to find its way toward leadership' in the Middle East:

CLINTON: Well, David, first, we have historically done quite a bit in reaching out to the very young people you're referring to. When I was just in Egypt, I met with a number of those who had been leaders of the activities in Tahrir Square and that were hoping to translate that protest into political action. A lot of them had been in American government-sponsored programs, they'd been on visitation programs to the United States.

As one now visiting the US under an American Government-sponsored program, it's nice to know that I will be called on by a future Secretary of State when the revolution comes to Canberra.

For a more substantive look at US visitor programs and how they can influence policy in foreign countries, see here.
