New media: The siren song of 'access'

A minor story to emerge from the White House press conference last week was that one of the questions to Obama was asked by a reporter from the Huffington Post, a four-year-old online news and opinion site. Presidential press conferences are traditionally dominated by mainstream news organisations, so this was something of a milestone for new media.

TIME's story says Huffington Post editors debated whether to even send their reporter, since he could file a story much more quickly if he were watching the event on TV from his office. Perhaps the lure of status and access overwhelmed them, but HuffPo's editors should beware this suffocating embrace:
