My books (and reading) for 2008

This year, I have been watching the collapse of Zimbabwe with increasing alarm and bewilderment. It is not a case of state failure but wilful state destruction by a dictator. My good friend Roger lent me Michela Wrong’s well-written account of the last days of the Mobutu regime in Zaire,  In the footsteps of Mr Kurtz. Well worth a read as a fine example of foreign correspondent writing and it may well be a useful analogy to today’s Zimbabwe.

Beyond books, this year I subscribed to a relatively new current affairs/design/fashion/travel magazine called Monocle. I, and my wife, now wait with baited breath for the arrival of the next issue. A very well presented magazine with a constant supply of quirky stories and factoids not covered by others.
