Many of us will be watching closely the fate of the American economy in 2009 and whether or not the newly-elected Congress (House and Senate) will support free trade or seek ways to raise protectionist barriers.

Two downloadable maps, an interactive one on US trade with Asia from the East-West Center and one about US-Canada trade from the Canadian Government, provide very useful information on how important international trade is for different states in the US. The US-Canada trading relationship is the largest in the world (about 50% larger than the US-China one, according to US Census stats) while East Asia is the most important region for US trade.
