Jimmy Carter reputation

Call it blog editor's privilege, but it was perhaps a little unfair of me to add a picture of Jimmy Carter to Mark Thirwell's post about stagflation, an economic phenomenon which, Mark tells me, bedeviled the US economy for pretty much the whole decade. Yet when I think of American economic, political and social malaise in the 1970s, my mind turns to Jimmy.

Maybe that's partly Ronald Reagan's doing. Carter was the subject of one of the most devastating and memorable put-downs in US political history. During the 1980 presidential campaign Reagan said: 'Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his.'
