The Iraq surge, one year on

This John McCain-Joe Lieberman op-ed in the Wall St Journal, celebrating the success of the surge in reducing violence in Iraq, acknowledges in passing that 'political progress has been slow'. But we shouldn't forget that the White House nominated political reconciliation as a 'key element' of its strategy when it was announced last year. And the Pentagon, in the person of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Middle Eastern Affairs Mark Kimmitt, said earlier this week that '2008 and beyond will be a success, the surge will be a success, if the gains in security can be translated into gains in stability…if I had to put a number to it, maybe it’s three in 10, maybe it’s 50-50, if we play our cards right.' Still a long way to go, then.
