Gershwin in Pyongyang

I know only a little of Gershwin's music beyond Rhapsody in Blue, so I'll take Rory's word for it that An American in Paris is not much good. But still, I think the US side might have snuck one by the North Koreans in getting Gershwin on the NY Philharmonic's program for Pyongyang. Because to me, Gershwin's music demonstrates that modernism does not have to be a soul-crushing repudiation of the individual at the expense of mass-man. It can instead be liberating and elevating. Gershwin's music also radiates American self-confidence and optimism, and that's always been the best way to sell America abroad. Score one for Gershwin and the Yanks, I say.
