I take issue with Andrew Shearer's closing statement yesterday:

The global financial crisis has already provided cover for two familiar manoeuvres straight out of the Democrats’ playbook: jacking up spending and hiking taxes.

If there is such a playbook, President Bush must have had it by his bedside too. Or, at the very least, he read the chapter on jacking up spending. And Bush didn't even have the excuse of needing to reinflate a tanking economy, which Obama now has to do while worrying about a huge deficit. By that standard, Rudd has it easier than his American counterpart, because Rudd's predecessor was so much more responsible.
