Exports: Japan by the numbers

Some statistics really do open the eye, especially those that counter what is the conventional wisdom and focus of the moment. A 3 February press release by Trade Minister Crean reports that for the 2008 calendar year, Australian exports to Japan rose by 58% to $50.3 billion (equal to about 5% of GDP). By comparison, exports to China grew by a still impressive 39% to $33.0 billion. It’s a shame these impressive figures have not got more coverage, especially the Japanese ones.

For more recent Australia-Asia trade statistics, see Crean’s speech launching the PricewaterhouseCoopers-Melbourne Institute-Asliank Index on Australia’s engagement in Asia.
