Euro power: We have lift off!

Just to reinforce a point made on The Interpreter in October about European power, over the weekend European aircraft manufacturer Airbus got its giant new cargo plane, the A400M, into the air for the first time.

The program is two years late and over budget, so individual customers may cut their orders, but at present, European countries will collectively end up with 180 of these aircraft.

All the caveats about Europe not having a single coherent foreign and security policy still apply, but still, this fleet would represent a global air transport capability second only to the US, and more ambitious than anything China has planned (as far as we know).
