Dynamism in the Pacific

To draw a line under The Interpreter's coverage of last week's Lowy Institute Pacific Islands and the World Conference, here are two interviews with speakers from the conference who demonstrate the dynamism and entrepreneurialism of the Pacific islands region.

First up is Andrew Abel, founder of Surfing Association of Papua New Guinea. It's an organisation giving something back to local communities though an innovative funding model:

Note Andrew's evident frustration with government, and how he simply decided to bypass it. I asked Vanessa Slowey, CEO of Digicel Pacific, about the same issue. Did Digicel transform digital communications in the Pacific by working with governments, or around them? (Nb. Digicel was a sponsor of the conference.)
