Discount diplomats

Nice to see Russell Trood kick this argument along in the pages of The Australian. Other than the odd crank who goes on about cocktail-sipping diplomats, no one denies the importance of a well-functioning foreign ministry. Even US Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who you would expect would be fighting bureaucratic battles in favour of his department, argues for  the importance of soft power and says the US State Department is underfunded. New Zealand, meanwhile, has taken the radical step of doubling its overseas representation. I'm hearing rumours that the internal review of DFAT recently commissioned by the minister will lead to a funding hike in the next budget. Let's hope so.
