Department of Own Goals

Airline Business blog reports from the Airport Council International (ACI) conference in London:

ACI Europe director general Olivier Jankovec says that security comprised around 5-8% of European airport operating costs prior to the 9/11 terror attacks. Today it stands at 29%, and around 41% of airport personnel are security staff.

It's safe to assume the figures for US airports would be even higher.

Usama bin Laden has been quite explicit about his intention to bait the West into self-destructive actions: 'All that we have to do is to send two mujahedeen to the furthest point east to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al Qaeda, in order to make generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic and political losses without their achieving anything of note other than some benefits for their private corporations'.

Granted, UBL's ambition to 'bleed America to the point of bankruptcy' are wildly unrealistic, but that doesn't make these own goals any more affordable.
