Can Boris save the Olympics?

No sporting event takes itself more seriously than the Olympics. There's an absurd air of pomposity and bombast surrounding the whole thing. It was bad enough in Sydney and worse in Beijing, with its additional layer of stultifying authoritarianism. The Australian media played along, of course. No TV or radio commentator referred to 'the Olympics' if they could get away with it. It was always 'the Games of the 29th Olympiad'.

If anything can save the Olympics from this ridiculous self-importance, it might be the British (who have turned self-deprecation into a national pastime), and particularly London mayor, Boris Johnson. Go Boris.
