ASPI Global Forces Conference, 2008

I'm in Canberra for the ASPI Conference, profiting from some very high quality presentations. That's both encouraging and daunting, as I'll be giving a short talk myself tomorrow on defence policy.

One bit of news from the event is that Warren Snowdon, Minister for Defence Science and Training, said in his keynote address that the Government intends to 'consider a draft' of the Defence White Paper by the end of the year — the Government had initially announced that the White Paper would be published by the end of the year. I understand Patrick Walters from The Australian has recently reported that it may be set back to early 2009. I'm not sure whether Snowdon meant to confirm that speculation, but it sounded to me like he did.
