2011: Year of the PLA?

For Asia Pacific governments and other observers of the Chinese military, the Christmas season was anything but quiet. CFR's Asia Unbound blog sums up the news from late December:

Chinese officials suggested that they would launch their first aircraft carrier next year; Admiral Robert Willard, the head of Pacific Command, confirmed that the DF-21D (the world’s first long-range, land-based “carrier killer” ) has reached “initial operational capability”; and pictures of the J-20, a new stealth type fighter, surfaced on the Internet.

The above picture of the J-20 prototype was taken by a member of the public observing the airfield from the fence-line. Allowing such photos to be posted online seems to be the PLA's favoured way of practising 'transparency'.
